In the winter of 1924, Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher travels to a school friend's house to witness the estate's famous Guy Fawkes celebration. But she gets more than the quiet weekend at the quaint family manse that she was originally hoping for.

The home is the site of some severe family tension. The Viscount and head of the family is a strict and unyielding sort, insisting that everyone - especially his children - meet his own unreasonable expectations. On the evening of the Guy Fawkes celebration, the Viscount is found dead on the floor of his study, killed by his own hand. What's more, he apparently first killed a guest - a married woman visiting England from Australia - before turning the gun on himself.

Now it's up to Alec Fletcher, Daisy's husband and a DCI of Scotland Yard, to unravel the mystery and the long-held family secrets that led to this state of affairs. But a solution will require, perhaps, more than a little help from Daisy herself.

Gunpowder Plot A Daisy Dalrymple Mystery (Audible Audio Edition) Carola Dunn Lucy Rayner Inc Blackstone Audio Books

This mystery revolves around a Guy Fawkes celebration, which Daisy is writing about for an American magazine. The Tyndalls of Edge Manor have for centuries marked the occasion with fireworks and a bonfire.

But this year is unique in that Lord Tyndall and an Australian lady visitor are shot to death during the fireworks.

Daisy's husband, Chief Inspector Alex Fletcher of Scotland Yard, is summoned to investigate, and the usual family interviews ensue. Unpleasant discoveries are made, a romance blossoms, and Daisy is in the thick of it, as always. Everyone confides in Daisy, because she's that kind of person.

The author moves the story right along, and it's quite engaging. The year is 1924, and the class distinctions of the period define certain characters and cause trouble for others. I enjoyed this novel, as I do all the Daisy Dalrymple mysteries. They rank high among my favorite escapist reading – light, vintage in flavor, and reliably entertaining.

Gunpowder Plot A Daisy Dalrymple Mystery (Audible Audio Edition) Carola Dunn Lucy Rayner Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

I guessed the ending about midway through the book. Nice easy read. Enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next one.
Daisy has been invite to a Grand house so that she can gather background information for a magazine article--in this case about a Guy Fawkes celebration. unfortunately, by the end of the fireworks,
This was the first book I have read in the Daisy Dalrymple Mystery series. I enjoyed the setting of 1920's England. Trying to figure out the 3 killings of 3 characters was a bit of a challenge.Gave my brain a workout. Just one murder would have been enough for the story, I thought. At times the story was hard to follow. I have another book of this series which I want to read soon, I got it after reading this one, so it was still a good read that made me want to read more Daisy Dalrymple Mystery books. I liked the larger print of the book in paperback form. Very easy on the eyes. B. Jackson
I love this series. I like all of th characters, especially Daisy. They are fun. The time period is one I enjoy.
Daisy is visiting an old school friend to see her family's Guy Fawkes Day fireworks. She and the younger members of the family visit the local pub and meet an Australian couple visiting the area where the wife had grown up. The next day at the fireworks the lord of the manor and the Australian wife are found shot to death during the party. Alec of course gets called in to investigate Daisy's host's family. I didn't see the killer coming at all and was sure it was someone else but that may have been wishful thinking on my part. Kind of bored with the never ending pregnancy of Daisy's though
This delightful mystery starts and ends with 2 boys of rank who are spoiled, unconstrained brats. I had not figured this one out, but had to remember my own pregnancies throughout. Still, this puts the reader in the middle of Guy Fawkes tradition at an English manor house, with all the stock characters and food. I drink entirely too much tea when following the exploits of the Honourable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher and her besotted husband Detective Chief Inspector Alec.
Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher, now late in her pregnancy, is visiting Edge Manor, the home of an old schoolmate, to do a story for her magazine. Sir Harold Tyndall, a martinet and bully (even with his children), nevertheless throws a traditional Guy Fawkes Day fete that is famous in the area, and Daisy is certain coverage of the event will please readers. But while the revelers are watching the fete's celebrated fireworks, Sir Harold apparently shoots a visiting Australian woman and then himself. Once again a reluctant guest at a murder site, Daisy tries to help her husband, DI Alec Fletcher, as much as possible while coping with a baby bump, the bratty behavior of the two Tyndall nephews, the family quarrels between the Tyndall children, and the continuing mystery of the Australian couple.

Once again Dunn finds a plausible way for Daisy to be involved in a murder mystery, and this one is reasonably complicated, takes place at a traditional country house during a very British holiday, and lets us know that spoiled children aren't a modern phenomenon. One of the better books of the series, with a large cast of interesting characters along with favorites Tom Tring and Ernie Piper helping Alec track down the killer.
